"Autorretrato".1889.

Este es otro de los tesoros que tiene la Galería Nacional de Arte de Washington D.C, el "Autorretrato" de Van Gogh tiene propia vida, es un óleo con colores vivos en donde el artista mismo se está reflejando.
El mismo Van Gogh reconoció la dificultad de realizar un autorretrato, principalmente por su estado anímico pues al momento de realizar éste óleo estuvo bastante enfermo, tuvo una recaída bastante fuerte en donde no salía (literalmente) a ningún lado Ello, se lo manifestó a su hermano Theo en una carta "They say--and I am very willing to believe it--that it is difficult to know yourself--but it isn't easy to paint yourself either. So I am working on two portraits of myself at this moment--for want of another model--because it is more than time I did a little figure work. One I began the day I got up; I was thin and pale as a ghost. It is dark violet-blue and the head whitish with yellow hair, so it has a color effect. But since then I have begun another one, three quarter length on a light background"(Cartas completas de Vicent Van Gogh, Carta No. 604).
Aunque este no fuera su primera y último autorretrato, si es menestér destacar que es uno de los más vivos, pues los demás o son demasiado pastel o con tonos muy sobrios.
